Try the following pairs of words:
ill-hill, elm-helm, edge-hedge, I-high, old-hold, ear-hear, air-hair, eat-heat, arm-harm, you-hew.
Also try the following pairs of /w/ and /wh/ words and see if your listeners can tell which is which:
wig-Whig, witch-which, wit-white, wac-whack, wen-when, wet-whet, weather-whether, Y-why, wine-whine, way-whey, wail-whale, wear-where.
Practice the above exercises in consonants a week.
VII. POLYSYLLABIC WORDS; SIMPLE CONVERSATION
We have so far practiced in pronouncing monosyllabic and a few disyllabic words with might and main on one air intake. In this section we will learn how to make economical use of the injected air to form longer words and conversational phrases.
