Figure 7 Motions of the tongue in inhalation method

033-1.gif

A: Air is inhaled mainly through the nose. The middle part of the tongue may rise slightly to send air backward.

B: The base of the tongue moves forward not to disturb inhalation.

C: A large amount of air expands the hypopharynx and then the air enters the esophagus. The base of the tongue returns to its original position.

・ A single breath for a single sound

Produce sound without injection by moving the base of the tongue with your lips closed, or by quickly inhaling while opening your mouth. If you continue practicing "ah-ah-ah," the increase in the sucking force will enable you to acquire it naturally. During this exercise, expel as little air as possible from the tracheostoma. (Be sure not to expel it forcibly, producing a hissing or fizzing sound.)

・ Sound sometimes occurs during inhalation, and is produced by the tongue touching the upper jaw (soft palate) during inhalation.
