世界各国及び地域からトップクラスの選手を迎え「第3回東京世界女子空手道選手権大会」が東京オリンピック競技大会の主会場の一つである国立代々木第2体育館において盛大に開催されますことを心からお慶び申し上げます。
空手道は、今や日本古来の伝統ある武道として日本ばかりでなく、世界各国に飛躍的な普及発展を遂げ、国際的スポーツとして多くの人々に親しまれておりますが、近年、女子選手の進出活躍は目覚しく、また競技技術も著しく向上しておりますことは、誠に喜ばしい限りであります。
さて、日本においては2000年7月京都において「第2回世界大学空手道選手権大会」、さらに2001年8月には秋田において「第6回ワールドゲームズ」の開催が決定し、両大会とも世界各国・地域から多くのトップクラスの選手の参加が予定されており、本大会出場選手の中からも多く参加するものと期待しております。
本大会に参加された皆さん、どうか空手道の神髄を目指して、日々トレーニングで鍛錬された成果を十分発揮するとともに、この機会に参加選手との国際交流を深め、世界平和の担い手として、今後ますます活躍されますよう希望してやみません。
終わりに、本大会の開催にご尽力されました世界空手連盟、財団法人全日本空手道連盟をはじめ関係各位に対し、深く敬意を表するとともに、大会の御成功を祈念いたしまして、お祝の言葉といたします。
I would like to congratulate the holding of the 3rd Ladies' International Karatedo Cup at the Gymnasium No.2 of the National Yoyogi Stadium, which was one of the main stadiums of the Tokyo Olympics, with top level competitors from around the world.
Karatedo as a Japanese traditional martial art has spread rapidly not only in Japan but also in the world. Karate is now very popular as an international sport, and I am pleased to know that female competitors have recently made remarkable progress in their techniques.
In July 2000, the 2nd World University Karatedo Championship will be held in Kyoto, and the 6th World Games is scheduled to be held in Akita in August 2001, bringing together top level athletes from many other countries. I expect many competitors gathered here will participate in those championships.
I hope that every competitor will fully demonstrate the results of their daily training, strengthen their mutual friendship and take an active part in the support of world peace.
Finally, I would like to express my sincere thanks to the World Karate Federation, Japan Karatedo Federation and everybody concerned who worked very hard in preparing this tournament. I hope this tournament will be a great success.
