Secretariat's report on IMO activities for the 18th meeting of ISO/TC8 in Tokyo, Japan, 1999-10-20-21
IMO Subcommittee on Ship Design and Equipment (IMO/DE)
From 1999-03-08 to 1999-03-12, the Secretariat attended the 42nd session of the International Maritime Organization Subcommittee on Ship Design and Equipment (IMO/DE) as ISO's observer representative. In preparation for the meeting,the Secretariat submitted two information papers to IMO/DE:
IMO/DE42/INF.11 for IMO DE agenda item "Guidelines under MARPOL Annex VI on Prevention of Air Pollution from Ships"
IMO/DE42/INF.12 for IMO DE agenda item "Items of Mutual Interest to IMO/DE and ISO"
IMO/DE42/INF.11 was submitted in response to IMO's interest in possible ISO standards to support IMO guidelines under MARPOL Annex VI on Prevention of Pollution from Ships. In IMO/DE42/INF.11, the Secretariat identified existing ISO standards related to sampling engine and power plant emissions. IMO/DE42/INF11 is attached as Annex A.
In IMO/DE42/INF.12, the Secretariat provided updates on the development of ISO standards and possible new work items designated as being of interest to IMO/DE in ISO/TC8 N 1000. The Secretariat also identified other published standards, current work items,and possible new work items that might be of interest to IMO/DE. IMO/DE42/INF.12 is attached as Annex B.
The Secretariat noted the agenda items at IMO/DE42 that offer opportunities for ISO support of IMO objectives through identification or development of international standards. Upon returning from IMO/DE42, the Secretariat submitted a table of proposed additional links between ISO and IMO to the ISO/TC8 Secretariat, recommending that the additional links be added to ISO TC 8 N 1000. This table of potential IMO/ISO links resulting from IMO/DE42 is attached as Annex C.
At the present time, one of the central topics at IMO/DE is development of guidelines to implement the provisions of MARPOL Annex VI. IMO/DE has been instructed to develop, as a matter of high priority:
