マスネー(1842-1912)は、優美な旋律や洗練されたハーモニーの美しさなどをその持ち味としたフランスの作曲家で、様々なジャンルに亘って数多くの作品を残している。この曲は本来は歌劇「タイス」の第二幕で奏でられる間奏曲で、享楽の女タイスが信仰の道へ入ろうとする、その心の変化を暗示した美しい調べである。その間奏曲の優美で抒情的な美しい旋律があまりにも際立ったものであることによって、ヴァイオリン独奏曲にも編曲され、高い人気を得ている。
The opera ‘Thais’ based on the novel by Anatole France was one of the most important works by French Composer, Jules Massenet (1842-1912), who was influenced by sensuous Spanish melodies and rhythms. "Meditation" is performed as an interlude between the first and the second scenes of Act II. The function of this beautiful piece in its dramatic context is to suggest the changes occurring in the mind of the heroine Thais, who is moving away from a life of hedonism in the direction of religious faith.
J.ハイドン(1732-1809)は、オーストリアの作曲家で、18世紀後半の古典派様式の形成にもっとも重要な貢献をしたといわれる。この曲は、1797年にオーストリアのエルデーディ伯爵に支援されて作曲された、弦楽四重奏曲六曲のうちの第一番の曲であり、ハイドン独特の自由と多様性に富んだ様式が十分に盛り込まれた曲である。四楽章からなる。
Austrian composer, Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) was the central figure of establishing the mature Classical style of music. The "Erodody Quartets", composed in 1797, well demonstrates Haydn's style of freedom and diversity. Today's performance is the number 1 of the six "Erodody Quartets", made up with 4 movements.

Pablo Casals：Poema del Pessebre (Arranged by Yasuo Minami)
カザルス(1876-1973)は、スペインが生んだ20世紀最大のチェリストであり、ピアニスト、指揮者そして作曲家としても活躍した。生涯を通して音楽が唯一の武器であったカザルスは、85歳という晩年からにおいてさえも世界平和と全世界の親善のために音楽を通じて世界各地で平和運動に貢献した。この曲は、カタロニア民謡「鳥の歌」を題材としてカザルスが作曲した。1971年の国連デーにニューヨーク国連本部において平和のスピーチを述が、自ら演奏して以来、「平和の歌」として世界中に知られることとなる。本日演奏されるこの曲は、南安雄氏により今日の楽器編成のために特別に編曲された。
The greatest Spanish virtuoso of the 20th century, Pablo Casals (1876-1973) was a cellist, conductor, pianist and composer. In his later years, at the age of 85, Casals launched a peace campaign utilizing music as his ‘peaceful Weapon’ , with worldwide performances of his oratorio "El pessebre" which is based on the Catalonian folk-song. Since its performance at the United Nations' UN Day in 1971, this piece became known to the world as the ‘Song for Peace’. Today's "Poema del Pessebre" was specially arranged by Mr. Yasuo Minami for this concert.
