NYK SIRIUS 5,700-TEU Container Ship
The 5,700 TEU container ship NYK SIRIUS built at Chiba Works of Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (MES), was delivered in April, 1998 to her owner Aquarius Shipholding S.A. of Panama. NYK SIRIUS is extensively equipped with rationalized container handling devices, and powered by one of the world's largest fuel-efficient main diesel engine with a shaft generator system.
It is a state-of-the-art container ship with significant labor saving and automation features.
Features
1. The cargo space is divided into eight container holds, and containers can be stowed 14 abreast in nine tiers within the holds.
2. On the hatch covers, containers are loaded 16 abreast in six tiers (partly in four and five tiers), and 15 lashing bridges are arranged to facilitate quick and effective lashing.
3. Up to 500 TEUs of refrigerated containers can be accommodated and temperature and operation of these can be centrally monitored from the cargo control room.
4. The vessel is powered by the latest 12K90MC model of Mitsui-MAN B&W main diesel engine, which drives a highly skewed propeller.
5. The generating set consists of, in addition to four diesel generators, a thyristor cyclo converter type shaft generator (of 1,500 kW in rated output) and a steam turbine generator which can be driven also with surplus exhaust heat of the main engine. The plant can develop a total power output of 11,200 kW and is controlled by a power management system.
