Kawasaki-MAN B&W S46MC-C New Type Marine Diesel Engine

Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd. (KHI) completed the first unit of the newly developed 6S46MC-C type marine diesel engine, which went through a type certification test on February 20, 1998, and received type certificates from 13 major ship classification societies in the world including NK, LRS, DNV, ABS and BV. KHI has already received orders for about 20 units of the new type diesel, which are being manufactured consecutively at the company's Kobe works.

This model belongs to the S-MC-C series developed by MAN B&W Diesel A/S on the basis of the S-MC series which had been very well accepted since its introduction in 1986. The S-MC-C series of diesel engines was developed with an eye to further compactness and higher efficiency, and excels over conventional engines of the same class by about 10 percent in power output, with about 10 percent reductions in overall length and mass. Its combustion chamber-related portions and structural part embody new design features, which, together with the use of a stronger material for the bearings, contribute to further enhancement of reliability.

This S46MC-C type further has a cylinder bore of 460 mm, unprecedented in the S-MC series, and this feature serves to expand the choice of marine engines for their users. The expanded range of options for the number of cylinders per engine enables the users to select the optimal model in terms of not only compactness and efficiency but also vibration.

The first S46MC-C diesel completed by KHI is a six-cylinder unit, which will be installed in a Japanese-built 30,000 DWT class handy size bulk carrier as its main engine. Another unit is also ordered for installation as the main engine of a small containership, and this type is expected to find use in expanding ranges of ship types and classes.

Since it began building diesel engines in 1919, KHI has supplied many diesels to its clients. By the summer of 1998, the company had completed well over 2,100 units totaling more than 10 million kW in power output. Capitalizing on this wealth of experience and performance records, KHl expects to continue to supply many more of reliable, efficient and compact diesel engines of the S-MC-C series.
