This procedure is a form of Newton's method (also called“Total Inversion”[Tarantola and Valette, 1982b (TV); Mercier, 1986]. The least-squares inverse of model sensitivity has been applied by Bennett and Thorburn, [1992](BT) to simulated quasi-geostrophic data, and by Bennett, et al. [1993] to meteorology data. The use of the TV iteration is an extension to the BT inverse procedure.

Where H is the matrix of derivatives (the linearized“forward problem”) which relate changes in the model parameters to changes in the data values. This linear relation is inverted by choosing a statistically best solution in the least-squares sense.
