Mandatory Ship Reporting System in the Straits of Malacca and Singapore

Submitted by Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore

SUMMARY

Executive Summary: This document contains amendments to the mandatory ship reporting system proposed by Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore, hereinafter referred to as STRAITREP
Action to be Taken: Paragraph 5
Related documents: NAV 43/1 5, annex 8.

Introduction

1 The proposed Mandatory Ship Reporting System in the Straits of Malacca and Singapore (STRAITREP) was considered and approved by the forty-third session of the Sub-Committee on Safety of Navigation and forwarded to MSC 69 under the cover of a draft MSC resolution (NAV 43/1 5, annex 8)for adoption.

Enhancement of STRAITREP

2 Recently the Singapore VTIS has installed additional equipment and software to enhance the communication network and the radar system of the VTIS.

3 With this latest enhancement to the system, the existing sectors 7 and 8 which are monitored by the Singapore VTS could be sub-divided into 3 sectors namely; sectors 7,8 and 9. Each of these sectors would be provided with dedicated VHF channels. The additional sector would improve the communication capability between the shore authority and the ships. It would also streamline the monitoring system to enhance the safety of navigation in the Singapore Strait.
