SELF-DEVELOPMENT AMONG STAFF

To encourage self-development among staff, it may be useful for bosses to note the following points.

1 Help to Establish the Purpose of Self-Development

Each individual, based on their own ability and aptitude, has their own clear goals for self-development. If the results of these personal goals can be applied to their office work, we can look forward to even higher levels of self-development. Towards this end, it is important that supervisors actively take part and cooperate in their staffs personal development through frequent discussion and assisting them to set concrete development goals.

It is also essential that the goals set for self-development are realistic and achievable. Unattainable goals will only result in a waste of effort. Excessive goals may also be problematic as time and energy are limited. It is essential to prioritize the goals, and focus on the important ones.

2 Motivate Staff to Gain Fulfillment through Work Improvement

Certain staff may feel that their work does not give them any sense of self-fulfillment and that they would like to use their time outside work more productively. For employees, however, a large proportion of their time is spent on work. Take, for example, a person who works for 40 years, from 9am to 6pm every weekday. If this person in their youthful days, with a large percentage of their time spent on work complains of not feeling fulfilled, can it be said that they lead a full life ? It is not just for the good of the organization to instill in staff an interest and concern for work, it also helps to make their own lives more meaningful. Once they are motivated towards their work, their sense of self-fulfillment will naturally increase.

3 Manage the Self-Development of Staff

Management is important not only for the work of the organization, but also for the self-development of staff. If employees do not make plans to achieve their goal, and proceed according to this plan, their efforts for self-development are likely to be wasted.

Without proper evaluations, they may keep making the same mistakes, be unable to respond to changing situations, or just aimlessly drift along. It is important that bosses keep a close watch on the progress of staffs self-development, assist them in making their developmental plans, and from time to time give comments and provide evaluations on the results of their efforts.
