LEADERSHIP BY EXAMPLE

Leadership by example is a method used by managers who try to act as role-models for their staff, in areas where they lack skills and ability. It is an effective method in which to inspire staff to emulate their managers and act in ways that managers desire them to behave.

Leadership by example is a leadership technique that should be actively practiced by all managers. It is useful not only for enhancing skills and abilities, but also for influencing work behavior and attitude, inspiring self-improvement, etc.

In leading by example, managers should note the following points.

・Do so enthusiastically

It is important that managers lead by example in a positive manner. They should not do it just for the purpose of coaching their staff, but because they feel strongly about it and sincerely want to do it. Unless they hold a positive attitude like this, it will be difficult to continue by their own example for long.

・Make it part of your daily routine

In terms of work behavior, attitude, and self-improvement, it is not an easy task to influence staff, even if the manager goes to great lengths to lead by example. They should not expect staff to change overnight. It is important that they are patient and take a long-term view.

・Do not force it on staff

In leading by example on matters such as work attitude and values, managers should avoid over-emphasizing their own behavior, or trying to impress their own way of thinking upon staff, as they may take offense and react negatively. Again, it is important that they are patient and do not force their ideas on their staff.
