(1) Assigning research topics to staff is effective in the following ways.

・Staff may become knowledgeable about the topic concerned.

・Staff may improve their ability to collect and analyze information.

・In looking for a solution, staff may develop their analytical and creative skills.

・With minimum intervention from their manager, staff may develop their ability to work independently.

・Through working in groups and discussing matters as a team, staff may learn to be good team-players and develop their leadership skills.

・In preparing the final report, staff may improve their writing skills.

・Through the presentation of their research results at office study group meetings, staff may improve their oral presentation skills.

(2) When assigning research topics, the following points should be observed.

・Respect staffs ability to work independently as far as possible

Whether or not this research will provide fruitful results depends on how motivated and enthusiastic the staff are about the work. If employees are to be inspired, it is important, with due consideration given to their ability, to let them select their own research themes and plan the work accordingly by themselves as far as possible.

・Make the importance of the research clear in advance

It is important to explain the importance of finding a solution to the issue or research topic in advance so as to motivate staff to undertake this work seriously.

・Be clear about deadlines

Without setting a definite deadline, there is a possibility that the assignment will drag on or be put aside due to other work schedules. Even when the employee is carrying out research independently, it is important to always set clear deadlines.

・Give ample time for research

Given a very tight time frame, there is a possibility that staff will simply undertake a brief overview and quickly summarize the key points. It is important to give ample time for thorough and proper research to be carried out.

・Closely monitor development

Ample research time is no guarantee of good research. It is also important to closely monitor the progress of the work, and provide any necessary advice and support.

・Apply the results of this research

Are there any occasions where completed research remains intact as a report, and is never put to real use ? Considering the amount of effort put in by staff, it is demoralizing for them to see effort wasted like this. Staff motivation may be raised from the mere knowledge alone that their research results will have real practical value. Hence, it is important to explain clearly in advance how the results will be put into practice.
