EFFECTIVE TEACHING AND LEARNING METHODS

1 Teaching

It is said that an outstanding scholar does not always make an outstanding teacher. There is a misconception that if you are knowledgeable in a certain field, you will automatically make a good teacher. Teaching itself is a specialized skill, however, which needs to be learnt and acquired.

The following points must be noted for teaching to be effective.

(1) Build a positive attitude towards learning

・Make the students feel relaxed.

・Talk about the importance of the subject being taught, raise the student's interest and concern about the subject.

・Make the students confident that the subject is not difficult to learn.

(2) Contents of teaching

・Appeal to the 5 senses. Make the best use of sound and sight, in particular, and explain everything in a clear and concise manner.

・It is extremely important that the initial or basic concepts are understood. Repeat them where necessary.

・Do not teach too much at once. Structure the contents and ensure that each section has been fully understood.

・Stress the important points, and emphasize them repeatedly.

(3) Practical training

・Observe all practical work, correct mistakes at an early stage in a sincere manner.

・Create as many opportunities for practical work as possible.

・Encourage students to ask questions whenever they have any doubts.

(4) Re-enforcement

・Assess how effective a lesson has been by asking questions at the end.

・Areas which have not been well understood should be taught again.

・Even in areas which have been well understood, check and test the students from time to time as a method of revision.
