3 Supervisor's Situation

Until supervisors who have recently been transferred become accustomed to the work of their new office, a participation or laissez-faire style of OJT is, in general, the most appropriate. When supervisors are younger than their staff, it is more reasonable to take a participation or laissez-faire style than a high-handed command style.

4 Work Situation

Delegating authority to employees is appropriate when the work is straightforward. A participation style is quite effective for policy planning work. In the case of urgent or important work, however, instructing employees without first gaining their consensus and explaining later on the completion of the job will enable them to accomplish the work within the deadline and develop their ability to work at speed on important matters as a result.

5 Other Situations

In addition to the above, the environment surrounding the organization, the organizational culture, its degree of vitality and relationships between staff will also affect the method most appropriate to undertaking work or conducting OJT. Situations vary case by case. Supervisors must understand the circumstances involved and choose the most appropriate opportunity and method for OJT.
