・Fields of activities
Since its establishment in 1948 the institute has been the only national research institute covering the science and technology of fire and disaster management, carrying out a wide range of research studies as follows:
(1)Basic research on combustion and fire extinguishing
(2)Research on fire-fighting technology for oil fires, forest fires, etc.
(3) Research on various fire defense equipment such as automatic fire alarms and fire extinguishing equipment
(4) Research on fire defense equipment such as ladder trucks and fire-fighting pumps used by fire defense organizations
(5) Research on substances produced by combustion, for example, poisonous gas and smoke
(6) Research on technical skills for life saving, such as evacuation and rescue, in time of fire or earthquake
(7) Research on the hazard level of dangerous materials such as oils and chemical materials, and safety of facilities which store and handle such dangerous materials
(8) Research on reducing damage at facilities storing dangerous materials, and at fire defense water storage facilities in time of earthquake
(9) In addition to the above, the institute meets the needs of society by carrying out the four activities listed below:
Technical assistance to local fire and disaster protection organizations
Research on causes of disaster
International joint research
Holding of research and technology conference
Fire and Disaster Management College
At the Fire and Disaster Management College, fire defense personnel and firefighters comprehensively study advanced knowledge and skills
The purpose of the college
・The college is the only national training and educational institute to undertake the following activities:
Provision of advanced education and training needed for executive staff in charge of fire and disaster management at national and prefectural level, and municipal fire and disaster management officials and fire fighters:
Provision of technical assistance in education and training for prefectural fire defense academies
・Educational Courses
The college holds a total of eight courses, as follows:
Four Courses in the comprehensive education section for the acquisition of general knowledge and skills
Four courses in the special education section, for the acquisition of advanced specialist knowledge and skills
The college also provides practical training courses, such as fire survey training courses
