Dear Dr. Ducusin,

 

In accordance with the RP-Japan Medical Cooperation Program on the Control of Schistosomiasis in the Philippines, Sasakawa Memorial Health Foundation dispatched Professor K. Yasuraoka to the Philippines for the period 7 February - 4 March 1999 to let him collaborate with the DOH and regional and provincial staff involved in schistosomiasis control of Bohol. This is the second dispatch of the experts to the Philippines in the fiscal year of 1998 through the Foundation.

Professor K. Yasuraoka met Ms. Hilda M. Mitra and Ms. Josefina Ducnas of Bayer Philippines, Inc. in Manila to order 50 kg niclosamide(Bayluscide W. P. 70%) for Bohol.

Partial payment in advance, US$2,000, was done on 9 February 1999 in Manila. The compound may arrive at Trinidad, Bohol by the end of June 1999.

Malacological surveys followed by clearing of vegetation with and without chemical mollusciciding were carried out in endemic barangays in Trinidad and Talibon, in cooperation with Dr. A. D. Redulla and his colleagues of Bohol SCT.

 

1. Snail survey

The team consisting of 4-5 staffs conducted snail surveys in the endemic barangays on 4, 5 and 12 February 1999. They found only one snail in Omaguin nan-made canal, while no snail was observed in other sites(Table 1). No schistosome infection was found in one snail collected in Omaguin man-made canal.

 

2. Clearing and mollusciciding

Clearing operations only with 3 sets of mowing machines were done in Boncales boggy on 15 February, in Omaguin seepage, pockets II and III on 16 February, and in Kasilion creek on 18 February. Mollusciciding with 4 kg of niclosamide followed by clearing of vegetation
