REPORT FROM WG16-AUTOMATION
1. Introduction
This report covers the period between the Working group 16 (WG 16) in Kista in October 1996 and the meeting held on Tuesday 13 October here in Houston.
2. Members
There are 12 members in WG 16 and one corresponding member. In various occasions, some experts like Mr Martinsen, Reinecke, Ciundziewicki, Maggi and Cogliolo joint the Group.
I deeply regret to inform you that Mr Erling Hagedal one of the most active members in the group, died few months ago. Mr Hagedal attended all the meetings and gave a great contribution in the development of the part of the document 18/848/CD dealing with computers.
3. Meetings
During the meeting in Kista a Computer Specialists Group" (CSG) was created. The group was composed by Hagedal, Messer, Wittburg, Uecker-Weigel, Peplinsky and Rensvik. The CSG met three times in Hovik, Gdansk and London and produced a document which was examined within the WG 16 to be included in Section 8 of the CD document 848.
After the Kista meeting the WG met in Genova at RINA Head Offices on November 1997 and May 1998 and was able to issue the CD document 848 which was circulated to the various National Committees.
Many comments were received and, after having being compiled in the month of September, they were circulated to the members of the WG.
During the meeting here in Houston the WG have examined the official comments and has dealt with them. The unofficial comments or the comments received late have been considered by the WG.
The CD document will be modified according to the comments received.
Relations with other IEC TCs
A possible co-operation between TC18/WG16 and TC80/WG6 "Digital Interface" has been proposed by Mr Haaland, Chairman of that WG.
The matter was discussed here in Houston and the opinion of the WG is that TC80 should be requested to clarify how their work may impact upon automation systems as considered by WG16.
An official answer should be given by the Secretariat.
4. Relations with other organisations
As indicated in the Report from WG16 to the Kista meeting, WG16 again recommend to establish closer relations with IMO by:
・ informing IMO of the work done in the field of automation,
・ establishing collaboration with the IMO to review or prepare rules of common interest, without duplicating the work.
The same approach could be used for IACS
5. Convenership
I will leave the convenership of this WG because of my new position within IEC TC18 and a new Convener will be appointed in the near future.
