Transfer of secretariat
Ladies and gentlemen,
Recently we sent you the reports of the meetings in Maldon, ref. ISO/TC 8 N 930 (Report 17th meeting ISO/TC 8) and/or ISO/TC 8 AG N 517 (Report 27th meeting AG).
During both meetings it was confirmed that the Netherlands will give up the responsibility for the secretariat of ISO/TC 8 and its Advisory Group, after fifty years of service and that a vacancy in the secretariat was foreseen by 1998-11-26, because no candidate had applied.
Shortly after the meeting new information came available and consequently in both reports we included the following note:
We are pleased to inform you that we received the following message from Mr. Koyama, Senior Managing Director Japan Marine Standards Association, shortly after the meeting:
"ISO/TC 8, as stated in its business plan, has been increasing its contribution to the IMO, international shipping, shipbuilding industries, etc., and is acquiring greater importance. Under these circumstances, in order to solve the issue of the successor to the secretariat of ISO/TC 8 and to secure ISO/TC 8's smooth administration, I would like to express that Japan is prepared to assume the responsibility of the ISO/TC 8's secretariat from the ISO/TC 8 plenary meeting (to be held in October 1999) and onward"
At the time of preparation of the reports we were not yet aware that also Spain (AENOR) had expressed their interest in the secretariat of ISO/TC 8, in a fax, dated 1998-10-19, to ISO/Central secretariat and thus even ahead of Japan.
