Like ISO, IEC has many functionally oriented technical committees which are of interest to our work, such as TC2 on rotating machinery (turbine type generators) and TC80 (navigational instruments). By the ISO/IEC Agreement of 1976, ISO and IEC together form a system for international standardization as a whole. Since ISO and IEC have established a Joint Technical Programming Committee (JTPC) and share many administrative support functions, the procedures for development of IEC standards are similar to ISO.
The Chairman of ISO/TC8 represents ISO at the IAPH meetings and has been accorded VIP status in IAPH. IMO, IAPH and IACS send representatives to each ISO/TC8 and each ISO/TC8/AG meetings to facilitate the communication, cooperation, and collaboration among the parties.
Each subcommittee of TC8 will establish its own liaisons for work in their area, keeping ISO/TC8 Chair and Secretariat informed. Liaisons at the Subcommittee level with IMO, IAPH or IACS must be coordinated with the Chairman; ISO/TC8 to insure a single overall TC8 coordinated position. Other liaisons are currently maintained at the Committee level with ICS (International Chamber of Shipping), ISF (International Shipping Federation), IMPA (International Marine Pilots Association), and ILO (International Labour Organization).
