Physical fitness and walking ability of the elderly
II . The relationships between leg strength and walking ability
Takafumi FUCHIMOTO, Hiroto KATO and Masahiro KANEKO
To clarify the relationship between muscle strength of the lower limb and walking ability in
elderly women, the maximal isometric strength of knee extensors (KE) , ankle plantar flexors
(APF) , and ankle dorsiflexors (ADF) was determined on 161 healthy females from 18 to 89 years
of age. Using a video camera, the normal walking speed and maximal walking speed were also
analyzed. Compared with subjects in their 40's significant decreases in muscle strength of KE and
APF were observed in subjects in their 60's, 70's, and 80's, and ADF in subjects in their 80's.
Concerning the normal and maximal walking speeds and step length, no significant changes were
observed among subjects in their 40's, 50's, 60's, or 70's. However, the 80 years group showed
significant decreases in these measurements. Step frequencies for both normal and maximal speed
walking did not change with age. Regarding the relationship between muscle strength and walking
speed, a critical point was observed which indicates decreases in strength and walking speed. These
critical strength values were 250 N in KE, 400 N in APF, and 150 N in ADF. These results suggest
that reduction in muscle strength of the lower limb may be related to reduced walking ability with
age.
