Oxygen uptake during swimming exercise of middle-aged to
elderly women :

lzumi TABATA, Mitsuru HIGUCHI and Futoshi OGITA*

The purpose of this study was to measure the highest value of oxygen uptake during swimming of middle-aged to elderly women. Ten women (age : 43-70 yrs) , swam in a pool in which a computerized pacemaker was set. The lighted pacemaker block ran at speeds controlled by a computer. The subjects swam for 50-m at speeds indicated by the pacemaker. The swimming speed was increased every 50-m swim with 20-s rest between the bouts. Respiratory gas samples were collected during the last 30-s period of each 50-m Swim. The highest value of oxygen uptake during swimming was 27.6±7.2 ml/kg/min, while the peak oxygen uptake measured during walking and running on a treadmill was 32.2±6.4 ml/kg/min. The relative percent of the highest oxygen uptake during swimming was 85±9% of the peak oxygen uptake during treadmill exercise. The highest oxygen uptake of the coach during swimming was higher than the peak oxygen uptake observed during treadmill running, while the oxygen uptake during sWimming, relatively to the oxygen uptake during treadmill exercise, was the lowest in subjects who swam at the lowest speed. These results demonstrated that oxygen uptake during swimming can be measured in middle-aged to elderly women. Furthermore, the findings suggest that changes in maximal oxygen uptake during swimming can be used to evaluate the swimming-training effect on an aerobic energy supplying system of middle-aged to elderly women.
