To evaluate the effects of sustained exercise habits or sports activities on physical fitness,
emotion and life of the elderly, members of sports clubs examined in 1994 were assessed again in
1998. The following results were obtained in 29 subjects who were examined in both years (7 males and 22 females ; mean age 72. 7±4. 7 years in 1998) .
The physical fitness of the subjects was slightly deteriorated in 1998 conpared with 4 years before
in grip strength and vertical jump but was not changed in other aspects. However, the subjective
evaluation of fitness decreased significantly in the females. No marked changes were observed in
the score on the geriatric depression scale (GDS score) after 4 years, indicating emotional stability
of the subjects, and most subjects reported a good state of health. More than 90% of the subjects
mentioned "fun", "joy of exercismg", or "making friends" as reasons for attending sports clubs, and
many subjects were aware of favorable changes in their physical, mental, and living conditions by
regular attendance. Concerning how the subjects spent time, the males spent slightly less time out
of the home after 4 years, but both the males and females spent more time walking.
These results suggest that continuation of exercise or sports is effective in the elderly to improve
their QOL in many aspects.
