To examine the relationship between the physical fitness level and characteristics of the activities
of daily living, 5 fit elderly women between 57 and 68 years of age rose from a chair at 4 different
heights, 50%, 75%, 100% and 125% of each tibial length. All subjects participated in the exercise
classes weekly and had opportunities for physical activities more than twice a week for many years.
Two-dimensional motion analysis was performed using a recorded video tape. The time required
for sit-to-stand motion was significantly longer in 50% and 75% conditions compared to 100%
conditions (p<0.01 and p<0.05, respectively) . The degree of trunk forward lean was significantly
larger in 50% and 75%, while it was smaller in 125%, than in 100% conditions. The joint angle
change of both hip flexion and knee flexion was significantly larger in lower height conditions than
in 100% and higher conditions (p<0.01) . Compared to younger subjects in previous studies, these
postural changes were slightly smaller in the present study. The results suggest that fit elderly
women showed similar motion patterns to younger subjects. Further research, especially in unfit
elderly subjects, is needed to clarify the effects of age and physical fitness on the motion characteris
tics of the activities of daily living in the elderly.
