Energy expenditure during volleyball practice in female
junior high school students and its effect on physical fitness

Hiroyuki YOSHIDA and Hirohiko KAGAYA*

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between energy expenditure and physical fitness in junior high school volleyball players. The subjects were 16 junior high school students. The duration of practice ranged from one to three hours a day, 4 days a week. Stature, weight, skinfold thickness (triceps and subscapular), grip strength, back strength, Ieg extension, vertical jump, whole body reaction time, anaerobic power, and aerobic power were measured. Heart rate was monitored during practice, and energy expenditure was calculated. When the physique between the 1st+2nd grade group and the 3rd grade group was compared the 3rd grade group was found to be significantly taller. No significant difference was found in weight. Skinfold thickness of the 3rd grade group (37.4±5.7 mm) was significantly larger than that of the I st+2 nd grade group(27.0±7.5mm) . Leg extension of the 3 rd grade group (37.5±3.4 kg) was significantly greater than that of the I st+2 nd group (25.7±6.9kg) . Furthermore, the 3rd grade group showed a slgniflcantly higher PWC170 value (l08±18W vs 73±17W) . No significant difference was found in grip strength, back strength, vertical jump, whole body reaction time, or anaerobic and aerobic power. Energy expenditure during practice in the I st+2nd grade group (157.7±58.5kcal/h) was significantly lower than that in the 3rd grade group (233.5±11.1kcal/h). Correlation coefficients between energy expenditure and skinfold thickness, grip strength, back strength, Ieg extension, and PWC170 were significant. However, partial correlation eliminating weight factor was not signifi cantly. The results suggested that volleyball practice (1-3hours/day, 4days/week) of these Subjects did not significantly affect the physical fitness of these subjects. We concluded that physical fitness in junior high school female students depends on the degree of individual growth rather than
training stimulation.
