Dietary records and dietary habits were investigated in 15 female junior high school students who
were members of a volleyball club. A questionnaire about dietary habits which included the
following items ; dietary behavior, attitude towards diet and interest in nutritional information was
completed by each subject. Dietary records showed that the subjects had a low and inadequate
calcium intake. Their diets were high in total fat and low in dietary fiber. They consumed 32-36% >
of their calories from fat, whereas the current recommendation (Recommended Dietary Allowances
for the Japanese) is 25-30% for the 1-17 years age group.
To assess their dietary patterns in terms of nutrient intake, a principal component analysis was
then applied, and three factors were assessed ; staple foods and side dishes (the first principal
component) , main dishes and dairy products (the second principal component), energy intake (the
third principal component) . Relationships were observed between the principal components and
anthropological measurements or dietary habits. For example, a significant positive correlation was
observed between the second principal component "main dishes and dairy products" and "select
non sugar drinkin the convemence store" (r=0.586 p<0.05). The third principal component,
"energy intake" showed a significant positive correlation with body weight or BMI (r-0.617,p<
0.05,r= 0.692,p<0.01).
Our findings indicated that improved or increased nutritional education is needed for female
junior high school students.
