I offer my hearty congratulations on the holding of the
grand Seventh Sumo World Championships at the Ryogoku
Kokugikan with the finest athletes from around the world.
The Japan Sumo Association has strived to promote and
contribute sumo, one of Japan's traditional sports, to its
development, as cur task is to proudly pass on the sport
which has become an integral part of the Japanese way of life
to future generations.
A number of demonstrations to introduce this enjoyable,
magnificent sport abroad, together with active efforts of the
International Sumo Federation, have resulted in more
recognition of sumo throughout the world. It is our utmost
pleasure to see today's worldwide popularity of sumo.
This is the most prominent amateur sumo tournament with
selected participants who have made excellent showings at
championships held this year in each country and region.
I would like the contestants of this tournament to play a
role in handing down the remarkable sumo culture. Highly
honoring courtesy and training the mind, technique and body,
their fair play will represent the good tradition of sumo. At
the same time. I would appreciate their taking an important
part in transmitting the sumo culture and popularizing sumo
by developing the younger generation in their own country and
region.
I conclude my speech with a sincere gratitude for those
who have contributed in the opening of the championship and
the enthusiastic spectators. I wish a great success of the
championship and further prosperity of all concerned parties.
Katsuo Tokitsukaze
Chairman
Japan Sumo Association
