2. 概要

The ice season in the most northern part of the Baltic Sea lasts for six months and in the central part 2-3 weeks making all Finnish harbours ice bound during normal winters. Hence the need of ice information cannot be underestimated. The sea ice observation network was set up in 1800s, and during the World War ? a real-time operational routine was founded. After founding of the Finnish Institute of Marine Research, and the operational Baltic Sea ice information service - shortly Ice Service - was organized to collect, combine, analyze and distribute sea ice information.

The ice conditions are reported in the wintertime daily by ice charts, which can be obtained via fax (Call-fax system), ice reports and coded ice reports are broadcasted and numerical model based ice forecasts are performance. Also processed satellite images (NOAA and ERS) are sent to the active icebreakers via especially designed communication system (IRIS).

Traditionally the main customers of the sea ice information have been with shipping, fishing and military. The standard daily products are ice reports in Finnish, Swedish and English, ice charts Baltic Sea Ice Code ice forecasts.

The daily Ice Service activities are started in October and lasted to the end of ice season in late May.
