SAGA SKY, Tenth in a Series of Multipurpose Open Bulk Carrier
The 46,700-dwt SAGA SKY, the tenth vessel built by Oshima Ship-building Co., Ltd. in its Open-Type Bulk Carrier series, was delivered in March 1996 to Pioneer Reefer Maritime S.A.
The first, second, sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth and tenth vessels are Japanese-owned, and the third, fourth, fifth are Norwegian-owned. All ten are operated by Saga Forest pool.
The special feature of the vessels is their open hatch type box-shaped holds. The series has demonstrated excellent performance in sea- worthiness, fuel economy and high cargohandling efficiency.
The SAGA SKY has a bulbous bow, stern bulb and a highly skewed propeller to improve propulsion efficiency and reduce hull vibrations.
Two heavy-duty electrically driven gantry cranes have a lifting capacity of 40L.T. each and many cargo-handling functions. The design allows a variety of cargoes to be handled including roll paper, wood pulp, packaged lumber, containers, grain, aluminum ingots, industrial vehicles and hot coils.
The Diesel United Sulzer 7RTA52 main engine offers superior fuel oil consumption and reliability, in addition to easy operation and maintenance.
