In the mind of man, success can be To the doctor a cure, to the soldier victory, To the musician or artist, a work to hear or see.
To have success one then must find A problem or goal to tax body and mind To solve or complete to benefit mankind.
One must never give effort that is less In thought or action than his best To attain the joy and happiness of success.
Japan has definitely been a beacon for the world in her accomplishments in technology, industry, education and contributions to medicine. Japan led in exposing environmental hazards of heavy metals and began correcting her environment as an example for the world. (Slide) Since Toishi Kasahara was a fellow in genetics and metabolism at the University of Louisville, I have had the picture of the child stricken with Minimata's Disease on my office wall. It conveys the influence of maternal and fetal mercury poisoning on the developing fetus during pregnancy and how it affects the child. (Slide) This is a picture of a Kentucky infant with fetal alcohol syndrome. Producing alcohol is a major Kentucky industry. Now law dictates that a label appear on every bottle warning of the danger to health and to the unborn. Tobacco products, also a Kentucky industry, must also carry labels warning of health hazards. Many ask what these pictures mean to me. These pictures are a constant reminder that we must be vigilant and monitor industry, manufactured products and the activities of society for environmental poisoning and toxic wastes. Proper warning labels and directions for correct usage must be applied to all toxic products and to products that can injure a person or his unborn children.
