available time. People need to work, and work must be available to them. Work is important to our well-being. To be able to do something worthwhile is of the greatest personal value. Rehabilitating an injured worker or helping a disabled individual to become physically able to care for himself or to resume work is valuable for the individual, his family, his employer and for society. There are an increasing number of aged persons in the United States and in Japan, and we must be ready to accommodate this increase in life span and the numbers to be cared for in order to help them to have quality of life. People deserve quality of life, not only in retirement, but during their working years. In Japan there are long work hours, a high cost of living and limited space. You are making great strides for children and the aged, and we can learn from you. I would like to share some feelings in "The Gift of Work," which was written for our most productive research faculty member, Dr. Adam Matheny. We may benefit from its message.
The Gift of Work (For Dr. Adam Matheny)

"What each day needs that shalt thou ask, Each day to set its proper task."
One of life's greatest gifts is pursuit of work; No task great or small shall we shun or shirk.
In all our endeavors we hope for success. What is success? Like quality, success has many definitions and different meanings for different individuals. (Slide) I responded to the question of medical students with the poem "Success." I hope that this message will be meaningful.
Success
What mystical power lies in success?
Is it what one can do or what is best?
The goal of fulfillment of promise?
