Kersti Poldemaa (Tallinn Pedagogical University, Tallinn, Estonia)

The main goal of the research work was to map quality of life by determining factors and central components of quality of life, and describing mentally disabled people's quality of life through these.

The research included the analysis of living environment of mentally handicapped people and group discussions. For living environment analysis the Timo Saloviita's Adaptive Behaviour Scale (1988) was used. The main stress was put to the group discussion method, based on the David Gooden's method (1988),which was used in Estonia for the first time.

Mentally handicapped people experienced that although they live in the society as members of society and have possibilities to live according to their needs, several shortages are in their life. It was also perceived that they do not have right to work and decide where to live.

Discussions left impression, that this group discussion method develops communication with each other. Group discussions may support mentally disabled people so that they could influence their lives themselves by presenting their opinions and visions, which should be life with high quality.
