FAR-REACHING CONSEQUENCES OF PROLONGED LOW DOSE RADIATION INFLUENCE: RELEVANCE TO MEDICAL REHABILITATION

Tatyana A. Zolotaryova, Vladimir V. Anyomenko (Institute of Medical Rehabilitation, Odessa, Ukraine)

For the purpose of improving the rehabilitating treatment of patients having suffered from Chernobyl catastrophe we have accomplished our experimental and clinical investigation of activity of hepatic monooxygenase system responsible for metabolism of xenobiotics and endogenous substrates.

The activity changes in this system were studied in rats after prolonged application (1 month) of low dose radiation (the total dose 200 mGy). In patients, residing in the area of Ukraine with strict radioecological control, we evaluated the hepatic monooxygenase activity changes using noninvasive antipyrine test.

In our experiments we have found out a distinguish decrease of the total content of cytochrome P-450 and microsomal N-demethylase activity as well as an increase in catalytic activity of main cytochrome P-450 forms, participating in steroid metabolism. In clinical studies we have revealed significant growth of T-1/2 antipyrine and significant descent of antipyrine clearance, indicating the inhibition of hepatic monooxygenase system in the observed patients.

It is expedient to take the obtained data into consideration restoring such patients to the state of health.

"PHYSIATRISTS AT SAO PAULO: WHAT DO THEY EXPECT FROM PM&R SOCIETY?"

Auri A. Bruno, C. A. Brito Jr, P.G. Plapler - (PM&R Department at Sao Paulo Medical Assoclation (APM) - Sao Paulo, SP - Brazil)

This study analyzed the characteristics of 216 physiatrists from Sao Paulo State, that answered a questionary by telephone call. The questions were matched by type of activity (private clinic or academic institution), areas for interest in PM&R, participations at congress and the relationship with our society (member or non-member, etc). We found out that 22% has been working in another area like orthopaedic surgery, neurology, reumathology and EMG. From the remaining 78%, only 42% have specific interest on rehabilitation research but 81% would like to keep as a member. We still have to compare this data with others specialities, but we noticed that our medical schools don't have interest to divulge the Phisiatry or to incentive more research in the PM&R fields (Au).
