PURPOSE. The purpose of this study is to determine quantitatively whether acupuncture is effective in the improvement of motion pain in the elbow of persons with rheumatoid arthritis (RA).

METHODS. Seven patients with RA who had moderate elbow pain and 7 controls without elbow pain were examined. Acupuncture was performed at two points; Large Intestine Meridian 4 (Go-koku) and Large Intestine Meridian 11 (Kyoku-chi) of one upper extremity. Passive motion of the wrist was also examined as a control treatment. Outcome measures were visual analog scale (VAS) of elbow pain, skin temperature of bilateral hand, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, pulse rate, and the recovery time of oxyhemoglobin density in biceps brachii muscle. The oxyhemoglobin density was measured using quantitative non-invasive near-infrared spectroscopy. Statistical evaluation was performed as 14 cases because each treatment was performed twice per person.

RESULTS. The result of VAS in RA group consisted of 9 decreased, 4 no change, and one increased case. In RA group, the VAS except for the one increased case, the skin temperature of the examined side, and the systolic blood pressure were statistially different between before and after the acpuncture.

CONCLUSION. Acupuncture was found to be effective against motion pain of elbow, skin temperature, and systolic blood pressure in RA patients.

The goal of the Institute of Clinical Patofisiology (Nizhny Novgorod, Russia) is to develop the diagnostic and triatment systems with oriental and occidental medicine as well as the newest medical equipment applied.

There has been developed the computerized diagnostics and treatment system for the early stages of the human diseases (oncological included) consisted of the 3 components:

1. Thermovision System <> - to measure and interpret theinfrared radiation of the acupuncture zones to make the diagnosis.

2. The Diagnostics System <> to measure and interpret the conductivity of the auricular points.

3. The Diagnostics and Treatment System <> -to find and treat the thymus dependent immunodeficiency by the thermographical examination of the acupuncture zones and their treatment with infrared radiation.

There have been developed 5 types of the microwave resonance therapy apparatus which influence on the acupuncture points by the extremely high frequency radiation with the extremely low power (single quantum ). The apparatus are used to treat the diseases accompanied by the metabolic and microcirculatory disorders.

The exhibited apparatus are used in 32 countries.
