Appendix 10-1 Construction Schedule for Sirsi Circle-Town Hall Flyover (SCTH Flyover CW)

Before we discuss the BELRT guideway Construction schedule, we outline and describe the schedule of the Sirsi Circle-Town Hall Flyover (length 2.5 km) construction work at Mysore road in Bangalore performed by the incremental launching girder method, called the block method in Japan, the same method as adopted for the BELRT project. We had a chance to observe the construction work.

(1) 0utiine of SCTH Flyover CW

Purpose: The road is a funk route between Mysore and Bangalore and is now used by a total of 3,400 cars per hour (both directions). Due to faf8c congestion, average speed is 5 kph. Traffic volume is increasing 13% per year. The flyover will be constructed to eliminate traffic congestion.

Length: 2.5 km

Location: Mysore Road, Gowripalya district

Period: July 4, 1996 to January 3, l999

Construction period: 30 months

Work system: Three shifts, 24 hours per day (Work is halted on Sunday nights for machine inspection and repair.)

Number of workers: 250 workers per shift x 3 shifts = 750 workers per day

Design

Upper structure One-span four-box trapezoidal box-type prestressed concrete (PC) girders for double-track lines

Width of upper structure girders: 16.2 m (four-lane streets for both directions)

0.4 m (shoulder) + 7.0 m (two lanes) + 0.8 m (separator) + 7.0 m (two lanes) + 0.4 m (shoulder)

Bridge piers T-type columns at street center (circular columns with 2-m to 3-m diameter)

Foundation structure Cast-in-place support piles, 1.5-m diameter and 19.8-m to 27-m depth, along the entire route. Six cast-in-place piles per footing.

Horizontal distance between support points at the bridge pier head: 2.4 m

Overturning ratio: 16.2 m/2.4m = 6.8

Length of span: 35 m

Continuation of upper structure girders: Maximum 9 spans, average 8 spans continuous bridge.

Cast-in-place pile machines: 1 (made in Germany)

Detours: Basically, traffic is prohibited while the foundation and upper structure me constructed. As streets are about 30 m wide, some traffic is allowed after bridge piers have been constructed. As the flyover site is in the suburbs, it is easy to secure detour roads. However, as the BLRT project will be performed at the city center, it may be difficult to find appropriate detours.
