8.2.7 Water Bodies

The proposed ELRTS Project Roads pass nearby many water bodies in different forms. The major portion of water bodies is in the form of natural or man-made lakes. It is important here to describe important ecological features associated with these lakes.

Bangalore city has about 81 man-made lakes presently situated in its natural drainage system under its agglomeration area. The following are the important lakes which are likely to be inf1uenced by the proposed project with its status and more.

The water quality parameters for the lakes as collected from Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) and sampled and analyzed during January 1995 are presented in Table 8.2-6. The test results show that water quality is not good in firms of BOD and COD parameters for all the lakes. However, DO level is found satisfactory to support aquatic life, Test results indicating high COD BOD ratio in all the cases except Madivala Lake help to conclude that lake water is polluted with industrial effluent predominantly.
