7.6.2 Contact rail

Contact rails shall be maintained taking the following conditions into consideration.

(1) Different trains consume power in the same sections and stop at the same positions relative to platforms. Therefore, current collection shoes generate abnormal wear on limited sections of contact rails. This means that contact rails must be regularly measured for wear.

(2) End approaches and side-inclines wear unevenly due to shocks or arcs generated by contact with current collection shoes. Current collection shoes jump at unevenly worn places to strike protecting plates or cause the failure of current collectors. Therefore, the wear of contact rails at high-speed sections, in particular shall be duly controlled.

(3) Settlement of sleepers will change the relative positions of contact rails and running rails. Therefore, contact rails shall be securely fixed and their height shall be adjustable.

7.6.3 Signaling and communication

The signaling and communication equipment and facilities will be designed to provide for high reliability and accessibility to system components and elements as much as practical, requiring maintainability and appropriate trouble shooting system.

Each module of major control units will be equipped with LED indicators on each unit for discrimination for operation status and/or failure modes.

As for CTC system, interlocking system and major system for passenger service facilities technical terminals will be equipped with each computer-based system with a VDU, keyboard and printer for maintenance and trouble shooting for these system.

(a) LRT

Although a vehicle for the Bangalore Elevated Rail Transit System is called an LRT its specifications are mostly the same as those of a heavy railway system. One of the features of an LRT is that the minimum radius of curve can be as sharp as 50 m to make the best use of alignment of roads. Trains are composed of one or more articulated cars depending
