(b) Material

Unlike running rails, contact rails do not require great mechanical strength as they are required only to bear the 10 to 20 kg sliding force of current collection shoes. It is desirable to introduce contact rails with the same shape as that of running rails. Low carbon steel is used to reduce electric resistance. Furthermore, a small amount of copper is added to increase weather-tightness. Electric rcsistance of contact rails is limited to 21.5 mΩ/km or less at 20℃.

Contact rails shall have high wear resistance to function as a contact medium, rigidity to prevent deformation with a maximum support span of 5 m and stability when installed, and permit the use of an economical construction method and materials to prepare for train operation in the future.

7.4.2 Conditions of Plan

We assume the following conditions in planning the substation system.

(1) Sections

Phase 1

Green line: Mysore Road to Navarang Junction … 7.25 km

Red line: Navarang Junction to Domlur … 17.85 km

Total … 25.10 km

Vehicle depot … Binamangala

Full phase

Entire route (including Phase 1) … 99.5 km

Vehicle depot … Four depots

(2) Trains

Train composition … Four cars (initially two cars)

Traction motors … Four motors per car

550 kW per two cars

Air conditioning load … 60 kW per two cars

Train weight … 75.5 t per two cars peak hours)

Design headway … 120 seconds

Scheduled speed … 32 km/h

Average distance between trains … 1.05 km
