3.2.2 Process of Determining Alternative Plans
In the above route selection process by UBTSL and BMRTL the following alternative plans were discussed.
These plans form the basis of final selection of LRT routes.
(1) Alternative Plans by UBTSL
(a) Residency Road-KG Circle vs. MG Road-Cubbon-Seshadri Road (Red line)
These routes pass south (the former) or north (the latter) of Cubbon Park. This was the most important route plan for the following reasons.
(i) These routes pass the largest business center in the city and a district with a number of government offices.
(ii)The former route passes Richmond Circle and Hudson Circle where flyovers are planned and heavy traffic flow, while the latter route does not. The former requires joint construction work with the flyover projects, involving technical difficulties.
(iii) These routes provide the most convenient access to Indian Railways' City Railway station and to KSRTC Bus Stand which is the largest bus center in the city.
(iv) The former route passes the most important traffic center, KG Circle, where the street is narrow and the radius of curve is small, while the latter route does not.
After discussing the above points, UBTSL selected the Residency Road-Hudson Circle-Seshadri Road-KG Circle route based on the former alternative.
(b) Kasturba Road-Queens Road vs. Nrupathunga Road-Cubbon Park (Blue line)
This route crosses the Red Line at Hudson Circle, and passes east (the former) or west (the latter) of Cubbon Park north of Hudson Circle. Hudson Circle is the most crowded cross in the city where a flyover is planned, Due to the flyover plan, construction work at Hudson Circle will be extremely difficult. UBTSL selected the former route, which will simplify traffic flows in the eastwest and south-north directions at Hudson Circle, and further have less influence on Cubbon Park.
(c) Dickenson-Gangandhar Chetti Road-SL Johns Road vs. Kenginton-SL John Church Road (Yellow line)
The route passes the western side of Ulsoor Lake, one of the scenic spots of the city and reaches the Red line after passing commercial and business districts (the former) or passing east of Ulsoor Lake to directly conned to the Red line (the latter). At first UBTSL gave a priority to the former Dickenson-Gangandhar Chetti Road-St, Johns Road route, however, later , Dikenson Road Theosophical Society- St Jon s Church Road route was selected.
(d) Indian Railway North vs. Crossing Route between Bagalur Road and Bellary Road(Yellow line)
Selection was made between a defunct Indian Railways track (the former) and track laid on the surface of the state-owned link road now under construction to cover a wider area (the latter). The
