2.3.3 Transport Problem

 

(l) Traffic Congestion

The highly mixed mode of traffic on the roads in Bangalore composed of buses, Cars, motor cycles, bicycles and animal - drawn carts often causes heavy traffic congestion because they all travel on the same road space without any separate right of way. Congestion is brought not only by the mixed mode of traffic, but by the narrow roads and also the growth of commercial and industrial activities. Some market place in the central areas of the city the utilization of space for business and commercial activities has intensified. Apart from the central areas, traffic congestion is also caused in some of the intermediate and peripheral areas of the city. Development have been allowed on either side of the road without taking sufficient roads margins.

 

(2) Inadequate Road Development and Traffic Management

The narrow roads with ill planed road network in the core area of the city basically caused traffic congestion. In addition some arterial roads connected with other cities pass through the core area of the city. Inadequate traffic management system was also the cause of traffic congestion.

 

(3) Parking Problem

Parking of vehicle in Bangalore turned out to be one of severe transport problem. Parking demand in the city is growing enormously with construction of high-rise buildings. In the core area, 60% to 70% of parking lots are occupied for long, term parking vehicles owned by establishments in the area. There are hardly any parking lots in Bangalore which is able to accommodate a large number of vehicles. In most of the places, on-road parking is resorted to.

 

2.4 Future Plan

 

2.4.1 Population Projection

 

Population projection is worked out for the design years 2001 and 2011 adopting the several forecast methods as shown in Table 2.4-1. The rate of increase in Bangalore required to be reduced by encouraging the growth of other urban center / satellite towns in
