2.2.6 Land Use
The total land area of Bangalore has expanded considerably over the years. As per the survey conducted in 1990, it is increased to 284 sq.km. The built up area of Bangalore city during 28 years between 1945 and 1973 was nearly three times more compared to the increase during 33 years between 1912 and 1945. The increase in built up area during 7 years between 1973 and 1980 was twice that of previous 28 years. During the decade of 1980 - 1990, the increase was even more drastic. Most of the built up area come up from agricultural land and partially from barren and scrub lands. While the city has a tendency to grow on all sides, the growth is more phenomenal on the western side.
