Dear Ono-san,
Thank you very much for your message of January 9. Inhabitants of Petropavlovsk_Kamchatsky were also threatened with the tanker accident because we needed this oil for heating in our houses. I think the establishment of the OBIC is very useful for seabird protection and so I'Ll send you information on oiled birds if get some data.
I see that you are very active member of the Japan Alcid Society and so I have a proposal on seabird diet study for you and your colleagues. I have a good collection of stomachs of seabirds (ca. 4500) which were caught in salmon driftnets in the Bering Sea and Okhotsk Sea during Japanese fishing operations. We collected the seabird stomachs in May-Yuly 1994-1996 in 7 areas:
A - between 57N-166E, 59N-170E, 56N-170E, 56N-166E;
B - between 47N-153E, 48N-155E, 46N-155E;
C - between 48N-148E, 49N-149E, 48N-149E;
D - between 50N-158E, 51N-160E, 49N-160E;
E - between 52N-153E, 53N-153E, 53N-154E, 52N-156E;
F - between 56N-150E and 56N-153E;
G - between 51N-160E, 52N-162E, 51N-162E.
Most of the samples were obtained from murres and tufted puffins.
I propose a joint project to analyze these samples. The diet study of seabirds is new subject for me and I have no experience in work of this sort. However I am interested to learn the methods of the analysis because it is necessary for my future studies. I can discuss the project in detail if you or your colleagues are interested in the joint work. Let me know what you think about this proposal.
Sincerely, Yuri Artukhin.
