2. The cost effectiveness of engine room simulators ( full mission/full
task, part task and desk top PC based) as a tool for training and assessment for : (i)
certificate of competency for all levels, (ii) pre-employment or pre-promotion.

Simulator specifications and instructor qualifications with respect
to STCW 95,
'Specific' or 'enabling' training objectives with respect STCW 95,
Course objectives and assessment criteria with respect to the ISM
Code, Assessment metrics and methodologies for ' functional' and 'human factors'
competencies',
Assessment of teams and individuals when working within a team,
The facilities, functions, validity, fidelity and other factors including the instructor's
and students inputs which the simulations must ( and must not!) possess for effective
training or assessment,
Student familiarisation time regarding hardware, systems layout,
controls and operation,
Costs of purchasing, maintenance and operation of engine room simulators and costs of
training/certifying instructors,
Simulator/student and staff/student ratios,
Transfer of training to the workplace and its effectiveness,
Sea going marine engineers views on the use of simulators for training and assessment,
Ship operators views on the cost effectiveness of simulator training
and/or assessment.
