The International Conference on Engine Room Simulators (ICERS) is the
global forum for the exchange of knowledge, experience, views, results of research and
identification of common problems with respect to the specification, design and use of
engine room simulators (full mission/full task, part-task or desk-top PC based) for
training, assessment and research.
This paper introduces ICERS and the previous conferences which were
held in Nantes, France (ICERS 1,1993) and Rimouski, Canada (ICERS 2,1995).
In 1991 IMLA identified a gap in their portfolio of international
maritime conferences in that the rapidly emerging community operating engine room
simulators was not catered for.
The inaugural ICERS conference (ICERS 1) was held at the Ecole
Marchande de Nantes during June 1993(1). It was attended by 50 delegates from 14
countries. Due to its success it was agreed by the delegates at the conference that it
would be worthwhile to operate ICERS conferences biennially.
Thus ICERS 2 was held at l'Institut Maritime du Quebec, Rimouski Canada
during June 1995(2), attended by 85 delegates from 22 countries world-wide.
ICERS 3 will be held at the Svendborg Maskinmesterskol, Denmark during
May 26th, 1997.
