8) DURATION OF COURSES AND contents

The courses are normally run one day in a week when normally this men do not go to sea because of the demand of local custom. The courses are held right at their door step in the community in conjunction with the association. The first course was run in November 1992 in Tema, Ghana and has become very popular ever since. Most of these men are semi-illiterates so these courses are delivered in local dialects by the lecturers. The duration averages about 8 weeks giving a total classroom contact time of 64 hours.

 

The course includes the following subject areas:

 

1. Basic navigational instruments.

2. Rules of the road

3. Aids to navigation

4. Communications

5. Basic ship handling

6. Basic stability

7. Fishing gear and designs

8. Survival at sea

9. Basic fire fighting

10. Care and maintenance of outboard motors and small engines.

 

At the end of each course, oral examinations are held and successful students issued with certificates and special seamen identity cards. Funding for these courses are provided by the Ministry of Agriculture from its educational fund, so the students attend free of charge.
