The Vietnam Maritime University (VIMARU) consists of 6 departments; Navigation, Maritime Engineering, Electrical and Electronic, Seatranport Economics, Ship Construction, Port Hydro Engineering, and some other centers. The training syllabus of the Navigation and Marine Engineering Departments can be seen in Annex II. The education and training scheme of seafarers at VIMARU is front - ended. The duration of training lasts for a period of 5 years (10 semesters) including 119 weeks of lectures and 42 weeks of shipboard training. The shipboard training is divided into 2 stages; the first stage is the so - called seamanship training which takes place during the 5th semester for a period of 17 weeks and the second one is graduation practice which takes the whole of the 10th semester. The terms and conditions for graduation are that a student has to complete the graduation requirements:

- Graduation paper

- State examination of professional subjects.

If these terms and conditions are completed, a student can graduate from VIMARU and get a Bachelor of Science degree in navigation or marine engineering.

Proficiency and upgrading courses are also held at Vietnam Maritime University. An organization which is responsible for the purposes of upgrading seafarers is the Maritime Training Center. The objectives of the Training Center are to organize and conduct:

- Courses for certificates of competency examinations

- Proficiency and upgrading courses for senior officers of various specifications.

- Specialized courses designed to improve the knowledge of the technical and technological developments in the maritime industry.

Training courses are based on academic programs that comply with the international requirements as well as Vietnamese regulations. The teaching staff lecturing on these courses comprise the VIMARU staff and highly qualified experts from the shipping industry.

The training courses are programmed annually in accordance with the requests of shipowners and shipping companies and are scheduled for each academic year.

 

2.3. Assessing the current situation of MET in Vietnam.

 

- The Vietnam Maritime Education and Training in general complies to the international and national requirements. The MET system has educated effectively seafarers for the national
