qualification. Two weeks after taking the examination, the successful
candidates receive their certificates of competency.
Annex I presents the sea carriers of graduates from VIMARU. Generally
speaking after graduation, a graduate can become a Captain or Chief Engineer after 8 years
of sea service.
2.2. Maritime Education and Training at Vietnam Maritime University.
The Vietnam Maritime University was established in 1957 and was based
on two vocational schools for navigation and marine engineering. From 1974, one year
before the Vietnam war ended, the Vietnamese Government decided to allow the maritime
institute to educate seafarers at university level for national shipping requirements. The
structure of the maritime education and training is presented in fig 1.1.
