Postgraduate Sea Training Course

The course at both universities aims to give six months of ocean training to the cadets who are going to apply for the National Certificate of Competency.

 

Graduate School

Both universities have MSc courses and will start a PhD course in Mercantile Marine Science in 1997.

 

3.2.2 National College of Maritime Technology

 

There are five National Colleges in Oshima, Yuge, Hiroshima, Toba and Toyama under jurisdiction of the Ministry of Education. The duration of study is 5.5 years from the age of 15 including sea training for a total of one year. The graduates are awarded a diploma degree and the qualification for a marine officer/engineer is the same as the graduates from the University of Mercantile Marine

  • Marine Technology: Navigation/Engineering (200 intakes for 5 colleges)

  • Electronic Control Engineering

 

3.2.3 Institute for Sea Training (IST)

The Institute for Sea Training is under jurisdiction of MOT. It owns two large sail training ships, two turbine and two diesel training ships.

 

Cadets and Trainees

The cadets must be the students of two universities and five national colleges specifically entrusted by the MOE and also the students of the Marine Technical College which is designed by MOT. Students of eight marine technical schools must be the trainees.

 

International Cooperations

The IST has a long history of cooperation with developing countries.

1) Project type cooperation through Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA)
