In TET, assessment is college-based and done on a continuous basis.
Different forms of assessment are utilised which include quizzes, tests, assignments and
project work as well as end-of-semester examinations.
Students who are successful in the internal assessment scheme are
exempted from sitting the certificate of competency examinations for the grade taken.
Passing the internal assessment also leads to an equivalent academic award. However,
candidates for the certificate of competency will still need to sit for the external oral
examination.
In addition to the assessment of students' achievements, there must be
continuous evaluation of the programme itself. Output has to be measured and outcome
evaluated. Any shortcomings should then be fed back to the system and remedial measures
taken. For this purpose, a system of quality loop incorporating both assessment and
evaluation is used.
CONCLUSION
TET may not be the panacea in raising the standards and quality of
seafarers but it should help produce seafarers who are knowledgeable, skilled and with the
right attitudes and strong values - aspects that are essential in meeting new demands
brought about by changes in technology, operations and manning. Through TET, ALAM hopes to
attract high quality and motivated students who regard the maritime industry as a
worthwhile and rewarding career. The goal is to produce well educated and highly trained
graduates who are proud of their ships, their work and the profession.
