Simply stated, TET attempts to address the human element (students'
development) in its entirety. That is, giving emphasis not only on knowledge and skills
but equally important, on attitudinal development and value enhancement through a balanced
and integrated curriculum.
Rational for TET
For any individual in any profession, the development of knowledge,
skills and attitudes, and the inculcation of positive values form the most fundamental of
basic foundations. Yet the aspects of attitudes and values have not been given due
importance in MET. If we have a well educated and highly trained mariner, but one who is
imbued with negative attitudes he would be of no use to anyone. In fact, he might be a
danger if entrusted with important responsibilities.
Critical transitional stage
The majority of new entrants to the industry join at an early age of
between 16 to 19 years. This transitional adolescent to adult stage is very crucial and
depending on the societal and environmental influence will help shape the person's
attitudes and values. It is a period most open to peer influence. It is also often the
period when teenagers try to reevaluate and assess the values, rules and boundaries set by
parents and teachers.
