means the nautical occupation has its own characters. The seafarers
must accept good and fully practical training. Once the accident of machineiy occurs at
sea, the engineers must treat it as rapidly, accurately and resolutely as possible.
Otherwise it may lead to bigger mistakes to threaten the safety of the ship and the crew.
Therefore the marine engineers must have good response, judgment, and practical abilities.
They may acquire these abilities from textbooks or from theirs everyday work, but the
practical training in colleges or universities is more important and necessary. During the
studying at universities students shall have successfully completed some basic and
advanced training in techniques.
In the four functions of Marine Engineering and Repair, Electrical,
Electronics and Control Engineering and Controlling the Operation of the Ship and Care for
the Persons on Board in the convention the practical abilities are emphasized in contents
and assessment standards. The contents of practice training reach 980 class hours in Model
Course 7.04, it takes up nearly 50 per cent of total hours. We have paid great attention
to the training of practical abilities in the revised program of our college. There are
14.7 per cent subject's on average. Moreover the concentrated practice training are
offered to further develop the students' practical ability.
The training courses contain military training, sea-going practice,
workshop practice (e.g. lathe work, welding, cutting, etc.), fire fighting, survival,
medical aid, marine engineering simulator training, comprehensive training, dismantle and
fitting training of machinery and electrical technology training. Total time of
concentrated training is 47 weeks, that is about two semesters. In order to keep good
training quality, special instructors and engineers and technicians are provided. More
details are shown in table 2.

3.3 PAY GREAT ATTENTION TO THE ENGLISH TRAINING
Most students will be engaged in ocean shipping work after graduation.
They may get to any places all over the world with the ship. They will communicate with
foreigners in daily life or in business, so language is very important to them. The
students are demanded not only read technical materials written in English but also
undertake dialogue with foreigners in English. They are also demanded write English essays
or business letters in English. Compared with other land specialties in China the English
level of the students of this specialty must be higher. In the revised program there are
plenty of class hours are distributed to the English training.
At university, the students of this specialty must pass the 4th grade
English examination by the testing center of the State Education Committee, meet the
standards of other institutes of higher learning. Moreover they will acquire better
training in understandable, oral and reading in special topics according to the characters
of this specialty.
Considering all the factors the subject of English is distributed 480
